Electric Tricycle FAQs

1. What is an electric tricycle?

An electric tricycle is a three-wheeled bicycle fitted with an electric motor and rechargeable battery. It provides pedal assistance to help riders travel further and tackle hills with less effort, while the three-wheel design offers a different riding experience from a traditional two-wheeled eBike.

2. Are electric tricycles easy to ride?

Electric tricycles are designed to provide a stable platform when stationary and during low-speed manoeuvres. However, they handle differently from conventional bicycles, particularly when turning. We recommend practising in a safe, open space to become familiar with the steering and handling before heading out.

3. How far can an electric tricycle travel on one charge?

The range depends on the battery capacity, assistance level, rider weight, terrain and riding conditions. Reid electric tricycle models offer advertised ranges of up to 60 or 70 miles, depending on the battery specification.

4. What is the difference between a 672Wh and 720Wh electric tricycle?

The main difference is battery capacity. A 720Wh battery stores more energy than a 672Wh battery, offering greater potential range between charges. The advertised range also differs between the two Reid eTrike versions, at up to approximately 70 miles and 60 miles respectively.

5. Can you carry shopping on an electric tricycle?

Yes. Electric tricycles are a practical option for carrying shopping and everyday essentials. The Reid eTrike features front and rear baskets, with the rear basket designed to carry heavier loads. Always check the individual model's basket capacities and maximum total payload before loading.

6. Are electric tricycles suitable for older riders?

Electric tricycles can be a practical option for riders who prefer a three-wheel design, an upright riding position and electric assistance. Features such as a low-step frame, supportive backrest and adjustable assistance can make everyday journeys more comfortable. Riders should still consider their individual needs and get familiar with the handling before riding.

7. Do electric tricycles need to be charged?

Yes. Electric tricycles use rechargeable batteries to power their motors. The battery can be recharged using the supplied charger, following the manufacturer's charging and storage instructions.

8. Can you ride an electric tricycle in the rain?

Electric tricycles can generally be used in light rain, but riders should take extra care on wet or slippery surfaces. Always follow the manufacturer's guidance for protecting the electrical components, and avoid exposing the battery or electrical connections to excessive water.
