OUR ENVIRONMENTAL PLEDGE

At Reid, we’re not only concerned with making riding a bike or scooter accessible for everyone, by offering great value at incredibly competitive rates; we want to ensure that the environments and world we love to ride through stays sustainable. That’s why we have decided to make a pledge in taking an active role in tackling climate change, by planting a tree for every bike, scooter, paddle board and kayak we sell.

This means that for every Reid purchased around the world, we will plant a tree in their honour. We have responsibility as a good-manufacturing business to offset the carbon that we are using to make our already sustainable products and what better way to do this than planting a tree. With forests worldwide being chopped down and burnt for the use of man, we want to ensure that our children and our children’s children can still enjoy the outdoors as we have and as nature intended. This is more of a moral obligation for us than a business choice.

MAKING THE BIGGEST IMPACT

To make the biggest impact we can with our tree planting, we have partnered with the amazing veritree, who will be planting the trees on our behalf. They have planted more than 55 million trees since starting their project and we’re honoured to be the latest partner to contribute to this.

veritree is a mission-driven organisation dedicated to global forest restoration through fair-wage employment, empowering communities to become active stewards of their environment. By hiring and training local residents to grow, plant, and protect native forests on a large scale, v eritree’s “employ-to-plant” approach generates powerful socio-economic and environmental benefits. Their goal is to plant millions of trees each year, bringing not only ecological restoration but also meaningful work opportunities to regions facing severe poverty. We’re thrilled to partner with Veritree this year to make a lasting impact for people and the planet.

OUR DONATIONS HAVE NO STRINGS.

When partnering with veritree we decided to opt for their preferred method of donation, general planting. This will be mainly taking part in East Africa, helping to benefit ecosystems, employment, livelihood, and nutrition. veritree’s reforestation projects are incredible at delivering solutions to help offset carbon emissions as much as possible and they do this most effectively through the planting of mangrove trees, which are the type of tree we will be planting the most of! Scientific studies have shown that Mangroves “sequester carbon at a rate two to four times greater than mature tropical forests”, and contain “the highest carbon density of all terrestrial ecosystems.” (Fatoyinbo et al, 2017). Mangroves are also key part of coastal ecosystems, and “renowned for an array of ecosystem services, including fisheries and fibre production, sediment regulation, and storm/tsunami protection”. (Donato et al, 2011) The key to mangroves is the large amounts of biomass stored underground in the extensive root system. These roots support the large trees in muddy coastal areas where mangroves thrive. (Komiyama et al, 2008)
